Big Donut is a battle course in Mario Kart 64. As its name implies, the course is in the shape of a large donut.
It later reappears in Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart World as a classic battle course. It is one of four battle courses in the series to appear as a classic course more than once, though it is the only one to not appear in Mario Kart Tour.
Mario Kart 64
The layout of Big Donut is quite simple. Walls line the outside of the course, but in the center hole of the donut is a pool of lava. If the players fall in it, they lose a balloon, and a Lakitu brings them out. There are also four rectangle-shaped blocks located around the course that provide a means to evade opposing racers and their items. The course is also slightly sloped inwards. Opposing walls along the surface of the course are equally distanced from the hole in the center. Two are close to the hole, and two are halfway across the stage to it.
Two misplaced Item Boxes can be seen under the course.[citation needed]
Mario Kart 7
Big Donut is one of three returning battle courses in Mario Kart 7, with several changes and additions. Aesthetically, the course's music is now the Mario Kart Wii arrangement of N64 Skyscraper, it now shares the same skybox as Bowser's Castle and DS Airship Fortress, and the blocks are now color-coded (red, blue, green, and yellow).
The donut's hole has seen various changes: four Glide Ramps have been added along its perimeter, allowing players to fly over the pool of lava. This is the only battle course in the game that has Glide Ramps. A Koopa Clown Car, floating in the center of the hole, creates an upwards air currents, giving gliding racers a boost. Lava Geysers often rise from the pool to hit gliding players.

Big Donut appears in Mario Kart World, being located south of the volcano in the world map . It is the only battle course to completely be a classic course. It retains the Glide Ramps from the Mario Kart 7 iteration, while the walls from previous appearances have been reduced to raised platforms, and a Charvaargh emerges from the lava pool in the center. It is also noticeably larger in size, likely to accommodate the significantly larger player count.[1] It is located in front of Bowser's Castle, and is driven through as part of routes between Bowser's Castle and Toad's Factory, Choco Mountain and Wario Stadium, serving as a split path. The route from Toad's Factory is in the Lightning Cup, marking the first time a battle course has appeared in a Grand Prix in the series.[2] It is one of two battle courses in the game to not be named after a race track, alongside Chain Chomp Desert.

- Instruction booklet: "This map is in the shape of a big donut. Because there is no guardrail along the inside, should you make a mistake, you will dive into the lava. Use the four walls to hide and ambush your opponents."
- Web page: "As its name suggests, Big Donut is shaped like a circle with a large hole in the middle. The course surface slopes up and away from the fiery central pit, and there are sections of wall situated around the track. Use these walls to hide from your opponent."[3]
